Jo surveyed the trestle tables. Everything looked to be set for the reception. And the weather, for once, was playing its part. It was a beautiful clear day, with just the occasional fluffy white cloud moving majestically across the deep blue of the sky, punctuated by the occasional jet trail. As best woman it was her job to make sure nothing had been overlooked in the preparations.

Kieran came out of the house, looking very smart in white shirt and dark trousers. The occasion wasn’t meant to be too formal, so he wasn’t wearing a tie. His hair had grown back to the length he preferred and was tied back in a neat ponytail.

“Is she ready?”

“Yes. She looks stunning.” He sighed. “I wish I wasn’t giving her away.”

“You’re not giving her away.” Jo smiled at him. “It’s not a traditional wedding.”

“Well, it feels like it to me.”

Jo looked towards the house. “What’s Tina doing?”

“Whatever it is bridesmaids do. I’ve left them to it.”

Jo smiled again. Tina had blossomed in the last year. She was no longer the shy, unconfident teenager, hiding behind a punk persona and a curtain of hair. She still had the punk look, and definitely more attitude, but Jo knew the softer side. The few weeks they had spent together as lovers were a sweet memory. They had gone to the Leeds Festival together and bonded over the intensity of those few days of sun, sex, and rock ’n’ roll. Tina had thought it would last forever, but Jo knew that it was a short-term affair. The girl went back to university when the autumn term started. They saw each other on a few weekends after that, but Tina had found her feet. She started to make friends and, as Jo had known would happen, they drifted apart. When Wade and Ian returned from their Canadian adventures, she moved into a house with two other women and had recently started seeing someone. It had only been a few dinner dates so far, but Jo felt there was something developing. She felt more settled than she’d ever felt before and was even thinking of selling the camper van and moving into a canal boat. A compromise. The boat was permanently moored to the bank but there was the constant movement of the water against the hull, hire boats passing through the lock, on their stately way to another place.

There was a car coming up the track. It was stopped by the tall figure wearing a bright yellow high-vis jacket with Yorkshire Air Ambulance lettering on the back. He directed the driver to the designated parking area.

“Dr Ed looks like he’s done this before.”

“Well, he volunteered for usher duty. Mind you, he’s always had a soft spot for Ellie,” said Kieran.
